Pools and Bikes are the New Toilet Paper for the 2020 Summer of COVID

Today I cut through quaint little Stewartsville on my way home from wherever. I passed the building that was once home to the town’s convenience store but had sat empty for some time.

That location now belongs to Cannonball Pool Supply, formerly in Lopatcong. This is exciting. It’s nice to see something come alive again in that spot. I decided to pop in and see if they wanted to be featured on Healthy Happy NJ.

The owner wasn’t there to speak to, but a few curious and helpful employees were and they chatted with me briefly. I was told that there is actually a widespread shortage of pool materials that come from the distributors who make and sell pools.

As you might have guessed already, this is due to the quarantine. It’s funny how societal changes affect what we prioritize and therefore spend our money on. Right now, sales of pools, pool cleaning services and pool supplies are blowing up — just like toilet paper kept on flying off the shelves this spring.

With COVID-19 restrictions still in effect, as of June 10, 2020 the Cannonball Pool Supply store is legally required to have only 5 customers enter their store at one time. Of course, masks must be worn. I don’t know how long these limitations on local businesses will remain in effect, so if you come across this post long after the fact, things may have changed.

Cannonball Pool Supply offers pool opening services and pool cleaning/maintenance. However, they do claim to be very busy right now, so I would call ahead and check availability if you’re interested in having your pool serviced.

Inside the store, you’ll find pool related supplies such as chlorine and chlorine alternatives, pool vacuum systems, float and rafts, and other important items that will help you keep your pool clean, sanitized, and free of insects and debris.

Okay, so we talked about everyone wanting a pool – now let’s discuss bikes. As I mentioned, I was out and about today. My main goal was to find a new bike for my nine-year old. I didn’t want anything fancy, just a regular kids’ bike. Something basic and not too pricy. Well… I hit Wal-Mart and Target in my travels, and neither of these stores had any sort of decent bicycle supply. The racks where the bikes normally are all lined up in rows showcasing various sizes and styles of bicycle, were nearly cleaned out.

So I hit Big Lots next because I thought I remembered seeing a bike display there. Big Lots is really quite an interesting store. It looks small from the outside, and it is kind of small – you can do a quick run-through in probably six minutes. But they do manage to offer a wide array of items and at good prices too. So lo and behold, I did see bikes there – but they were for little kids, like the kind with 16-inch tires and licensed characters i.e. Paw Patrol on them. As of June 10, 2020, if you’re looking for a bike for your little one, you might just score one at Big Lots! But then again, by the time you read this, they could be completely cleaned out of their random lot of children’s bikes. That’s how it is at Big Lots.

So the last place I looked that was local was Home Depot because I thought I read online that they had bikes. But they didn’t have any. So I continue to search in vain for a bicycle for my child, and honestly who has time for this? The whole process of just driving around took several hours.

But aside from that, my main point was that it’s really wild to see how something like a global pandemic can change consumer buying habits, and fast, too. So if you have a business that has taken a hit during COVID-19, seriously think of how you, too, can make changes to move with the times. I think it’s worth it.
