Green Bean Casserole. Classic American Thanksgiving Recipe

Are you a fan of that green bean casserole that someone always brings to Thanksgiving dinner? It’s a classic side for Turkey Day.

That said: I grew up in an Italian family, where green beans were cooked fresh, with plenty of garlic and oil. But just because green bean casserole is blasphemy to my people doesn’t make the all-American green bean casserole any less scrumptious. Green bean casserole

Scoop some up to enjoy in the same bite of that tender, juicy turkey… it’s a little taste of condensed-soup, fried-onion, boiled-to-death green bean mash heaven on your fork!

Green bean casserole is a great dish to make up in a hurry and take along to your family’s Thanksgiving dinner. Or, if you love this side dish and wait all year to eat it, then feel disappointed after it’s gone, why not break that cycle?

Have green bean casserole any time of year, for dinner just because. This is comfort food at its finest, so why restrict our enjoyment?

Green Bean Casserole – Also Known as Glitch?

Have you heard of this canned-food favorite being called glitch? I had a dorm mate in college who was from Philly – she used this term. I’ve never heard anyone say it since.

Recipe Prep: What to Buy

To make a tray full of green bean casserole, here’s what you’ll need to pick up at the store:

  • 1 large can of green beans. The French-cut kind seems right for this dish (they’re thin, so they absorb more of the gloppy soup… but you can get any type of green bean that suits your fancy.
  • 1 large can of Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom soup
  • 1 large can Durkee fried onions
  • Milk

Green Bean Casserole Recipe

Since everything in this recipe was already cooked once, it doesn’t make sense to cook it in advance at home and then cook it again on Thanksgiving Day. All you really need to do is assemble everything in the pan.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large can green beans
  • 1 large can cream of mushroom condensed soup
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 can Durkee fried onions
  • Soy sauce – a few shots
  • Black pepper

To make:

In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. As far as how much soup to use, just eyeball it. You probably have eaten this before, and know the consistency that you like.

Stir well. Use the remaining fried onions to sprinkle on top.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake until heated through and bubbling a bit at the edges.
