Tired of paying $7 a box for granola that yields 4 bowls of cereal? Great news. It’s super easy and economical to make granola from scratch using ingredients found in your pantry.
Granola Ingredients
If you have these items handy, you could make yourself some healthy and delicious homemade granola.
- 2 cups whole rolled oats
- 1/3 cup flour – more or less
- 1/3 cup butter
- 3 Tbs healthy oil, like coconut or avocado or even plain old vegetable oil
- Salt. A pinch.
- Spices – cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves
- 1 cup chopped nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews, macadamia
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, or regular table sugar with a spoonful of molasses, or honey or other sweetener in any combo
- 1 cup dried fruit like raisins, dates, banana chips, dried cranberries or cherries
For the equipment you just need a flat baking pan, possibly a mixing bowl, an oven and your hands.
Make the Granola
Start by mixing up the oats, salt, flour and spices. You can do this in a big bowl if that’s your style. Or, mix it directly in the baking pan. This is your granola, so go wild if you need to.
Add the sweetener and butter/oil or other shortening. Add the flour and start to turn this mixture over and over with your hands, pressing it against the side of the bowl or pan.
It should feel like granola… loose, yet a bit clumpy. If it’s too greasy, sprinkle in more flour. If too dry, add a little more oil.
Add the nuts and fruit. Toss the mixture around one more time. Transfer to the flat pan if you were using a bowl.
Bake at 350° until granola is toasted to slightly golden. Let cool.
Enjoy a bowl of it with milk.
Store the rest in a jar to have as breakfast cereal, sprinkled over yogurt or ice cream… or munch straight out of the bag!
