LIHEAP Program for NJ Residents Who Need Assistance Paying Heat Bills This Winter

Another heating season is coming. Are you worrying about how you’ll afford this year’s energy bills?

New Jersey residents who meet income and certain other requirements may be eligible for the LIHEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance) program through the NJ Department of Consumer Affairs.

LIHEAP stands for Low Income Energy Assistance Program, available in NJ to qualified residents.

The 2024 LIHEAP season will begin October 1, 2024, which marks the date when NJ residents may begin the application process.

The following documentation will be required for the LIHEAP application:

  • Current lease, mortgage, or property tax bill
  • Social security cards for all members of the household
  • Income verification for all members who are 18 or older: paystubs, Schedule C if self employed, or benefits letter
  • Current heat and electric bill

Visit the Department of Consumer Affairs website to apply:

  • Eviction prevention
  • Lowering utility bills
  • Removing lead hazards from your home

What if you don’t meet the income requirement for LIHEAP?

NJ residents who are over the income limits for USF and LIHEAP or have received USF and/or LIHEAP but need additional assistance on your gas or electric bill may apply for a NJ SHARES energy assistance grant.

NJ SHARES can also help with mortgage, rent, property tax and water bills. Learn more at www.njshares.org or call 866-657-4273 for an application.
